THE LIFE CYCLE OF AN EMOTION
The emotions we experience in response to stimuli are just like anything else in our world: they have a shelf life; they are impermanent. There is a time when they aren’t present, there is a definite moment when they come into being, a moment when they peak in intensity, and then they fade out until they are no more. That is the trajectory they naturally follow, that our emotions themselves want to follow and will follow if we allow them. If we don’t or can’t let them—that is, if we repress or distract ourselves from present feeling-states, we choke off the progression of their life cycle, and they have nowhere to go. The biochemicals that have become activated in us are left just sitting there in our system. If we were only willing and able to feel things through and allow their natural duration, they would, in a sense, remain liquid and pass through our system rather than become frozen.
